Acting Parts

You've had those nightmare acting parts where you have like two or three lines in the entire piece, yet you have to show up for every rehearsal and be present for all read-through's and blocking sessions even though your performance consisted of entering stage right and exiting stage left. Such acting parts inevitably lead to the obligatory post-rehearsal discussions with fellow thespians in which you are informed that there are no small parts, only small actors.

Understandably, sometimes this well-intentioned advice was even more annoying than the fact that your huge talent was being wasted on a forty-seven second appearance on stage, as these words were of course being spoken by people with acting parts consisting of multiple monologues and endless pages of blocking and dialogue. All acting parts are not created equal, it would seem.

Indeed, this was the process of discovering that on the way to becoming a big movie star, there are many smaller acting parts to be played. Judge Reinhold had the epitome of the definition of smaller acting parts on an episode of Magnum, P.I. in 1980, and a few years later starred with Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, a major blockbuster smash hit movie.
