Many young people who want to make it in the world of modeling figure that if they can just sign with an agency, their career will take off.
Young hopefuls have to understand though that nearly all of the top modeling agencies in the country are in New York and Los Angeles while the other biggies are in secondary markets like Seattle, Chicago, and Atlanta.
New York is obviously the home to the most prominent agencies like Elite and Ford. Those companies are here because NYC is the heart of the fashion and advertising industry.
If an agency decides to take you on, they will train you to become successful, give you test shoots, layout your profile, and put together zed cards and anything else you might need for them to sell you.
Basically the agency is investing in you to make them money. If it turns out you don't, they will drop you in favor of another client who will. If you are successful for them, they'll keep booking your gigs for you, leaving you to concentrate on modeling.
In secondary markets like Seattle and Houston, there might be a few agencies who can get their clients steady work but they don't have the budget to develop new talent. If you live in one of these cities and deal with these smaller agencies, you'll have to foot the bill for your own photos and training.
Credible modeling agencies have agents who make calls to find who's hiring, do lunches, advertise, and anything else that will get their clients work. They book time for models to work, make sure the models show up, handle complaints, and many more things which come with the job.
In the smaller markets, you find more of the scam businesses who make you pay to go to their school before you can join their agency. Once you get into the agency, you'll be lucky to get any work as jobs in these cities aren't nearly as plentiful as they are in New York.
In addition to this hurdle, there are scam agencies out there ready to take your money by charging you for expensive photos and other such things up front. A model's initial cost upon joining an agency should be very little. All credible agencies make their money when the talent is hired for a job.
